Five days after the horrible incident, the Pakistan Army discovered the final body from the Tanda Dam in the Kohat area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday, bringing the total number of drowned pupils to 52.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) released the following statement on Friday: "On the directives of Chief of Army Staff [Gen Asim Munir], Pakistan Army SSG, and corps of engineers personnel discovered the body of final missing student. The operation went on for 48 hours before Army divers located the final body that was still missing.
The five pupils had been saved alive, the statement continued. "All 52 of the dead students and employees have been located. Five pupils were also saved by the army diving teams of the SSG, army engineers, and Rescue 1122.
According to police, the students and teachers perished after their overloaded boat capsized in the lake on Sunday.
The lads, who ranged in age from seven to fourteen, were all madrassah pupils and had spent the weekend on a day trip to the picturesque, well-known weekend tourist attraction.
"The rescue effort was hampered by the severe weather, which caused the water in the dam to freeze. However, in order to recover the remaining bodies, the divers had to dive to a great depth, according to Khateer Ahmad, a senior officer with Rescue 1122, on Tuesday.
Numerous parents and relatives have gathered over the past few days, according to Muhammad Umar, who sells tea at a picnic area with a view of the lake.
"They would jump every time a body was removed from the site."
We would hear them crying in pain and agony every time a body was pulled from the area, and every time they would leap onto the diver to see whether it was their son," he told AFP on the phone on Tuesday.
He continued, "I have never seen such scenes in my life; it's something that cannot be put into words."
According to a police official, overloading was the cause of the event, who informed AFP. Over 50 kids and adults were jammed into a boat that could only hold half of them.
The boat could hold 20 to 25 people, according to police spokesman Fazal Naeem.
